Pumpkins make everything better.

Pumpkins
This week hasn't seen many updates, but I've still been hard at work - although some of that hard work may have included backpacking through the mountains.

When I did get back in front of the keyboard, most of the time was spent on the mundane fixes that I can't take screenshots of - bug and crash fixes, minor enhancements to the user interface, and tweaks to game balance.

However I did add a slew of new crops that can be grown in fields, and you can see one of them is pumpkins. I also added new plants that can be gathered from the forest. This coming week I'll be adding more fruit trees that can be planted in orchards and possibly some more creatures that wander the forest...

I've also made some big additions to trading, allowing the player to setup automatic trades anytime a merchant stops by as well as being able to place custom orders for goods with the merchants.

  1. Boy, I love your blog. Could you please write someday about your programming experience? Few words of encouragement for wannabe programmers?

  2. This looks great! The things you are doing are exactly what we city-builders love most in our games.

  3. So I've got all this money here that I'm throwing at the monitor but nothing is happening!

  4. This is awesome, but if you could adjust the color of pumpkin's leaves and make the pumpkins sizes variable, it will be mega-awesome πŸ˜€

  5. I agree to Lymos, the leaves are a little too bright i think, and maybe make shadows under them? And the pumpkins less shiny. I like how they seem to grow randomly on the field. And I guess they have to harvest them in teams, no person can carry them alone!

  6. The mail which said this post was posted ended up in my spam box. This hasn't happened before and I'm following you for over a month , is your domain added to a spam list accidentally?

I do love the pumpkins and they gave my the idea that you can make your different kind of crops appear depending on the environment.(e.g. near water and plain gives higher chance for pumpkin to be planted/appear)
This seems fun to me because so you can discover new crops depending where you built your farm and they make your town more unique.
I hope to see a post about the farming system and how you are trying to keep it fun.

  7. Hmmm... I know that this isn't a horror game but in those days they were quite supertitious... and, as I read in that interview, you like horror games, so... why don't you put a couple of monsters, wandering in the forest with deer, etc. You know, some kind of headless knight, and maybe a pumpkinhead. If you make them appear not that often, they'd add a little spice...

  8. Klous, I'm in the same boat as you, just throwing cash at the screen and nothing.

You should really get that fixed :l

  9. the punkins look good. I'm liking the scarecrow idea, whether its automatically put in when you plant pumpkins or if you can add it to your crops to increase production by a small fraction. Been following the game/new updates the past few months and its looking great. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to play it!

  10. Do you want some ground research? We're planting pumpkins next week. I could take some pictures.

  11. Hi,

Do we have to diversify the food's production. I mean, will people be satisfied if I produce, for exemple, only fish.

I'm really looking forward to play your game.

    Good Luck.

  12. Love the Pumpkins!

Will you only be doing individual crops so that there are bulk amounts of one food type or have you considered like a veggie patch where you can plant a mix of plants such as herbs, onions, tomatoes, spinach and carrots so they have a mixture of foods for soups (particularly over winter). Just wondering.

Other than that - I do love the current variety you have created. Can't wait to get into farming myself! I think that is going to be one of the more funner (is that a word) things in the game.

And remember to take time for yourself, we don't want you burnt out before the game is released. Hope your hiking trip was a nice change from the computer screen.

    As always great work!

  13. Scarecrows would be very cool indeed, and it could add some more depth to food production. Larger yields and stockpiles could attract vermin or pests, like crows, so you're need scarecrows to keep them away.

  14. I think its great that you post updates so often. I've paid for alpha and beta games that i get less information about.

  15. I like the idea of a vegetable patch that Andy had that could grow multiple types of vegetables at once?

  16. So, if I have understood, we could unlock vegetables and fruit trees with a "forest resercher building" ? So if we cut the forest too early, we may not have the vegetables or the fruit trees that would perform better than these we have already unlocked?
If it's not your idea, I really like you include it in the future update !!
    Who agree with me ?

  17. This looks great! I cant believe you've done both the programming and the graphics for this game! Multitalented!

@4lex0 My understanding for this game is there is nothing locked. Everything is unlocked at the beginning of the game, its just whether you have enough resources to do the job or not

  18. @Mathew , I don't think, because in this game at the begining you don't have iron tools, and the population can die of disease due to no potion made from plant found in the forest with a " research center". It's why if you cut all the fores you can't have these plant πŸ˜‰
But if there is my idea in this game I kill for this game. πŸ˜€

  19. I would add : I'am so excited of this game, the community grow and have more and more ideas for you, the talented dev'. So, consider these ideas and include them will be the best things πŸ™‚

  20. Theres only 2 games i look forward to more then this. And considering the games that are on the horizon, thats quite big.

Thanks for all your great work, and dont be afraid to ask the community if you happen to need a little help.

  21. I like the valuable info you provide in your articles. I will bookmark your blog and check again here frequently. I am quite sure I’ll learn many new stuff right here! Good luck for the next!

  22. What a wonderful little game! I'm perplexed as to the level of reality though. How is nightsoil handled? Does drainage weed over and need clearing out ever now and then? What about the vastly increased amount of heating fuel required for stone houses? Vermin control for grain storage? Predator attacks on chicken (foxes, cats, hawks, etc.)? Is grazing land rotated as well? Wells? How about different roofing material (thatch, slate, sod etc.)? Sawmills and sawpits? Wouldn't brick be a natural material inbetween wood and stone? What about wattle and daub? Material scarcity?

    The list goes on...

I've got to echo all the others, my dollar bills keep bouncing of the screen...!

  23. I happen to come across your site while doing a search for building games. This appears to be a forum for developers, but I wanted to let you know that as a game enthusiast, I am looking forward to playing your game. Amazing work.

  24. I loved as much as you will obtain performed right here. The caricature is attractive, your authored subject matter stylish. however, you command get bought an impatience over that you would like be turning in the following. unwell undoubtedly come more until now once more as precisely the same just about a lot often inside case you protect this hike.

  25. That's really great thing you're doing here. Only thing i feel pity about is that most of people who want to lay hand on this game will not buy it πŸ™

  26. What a great game I accidently found on youtube. You should definately go for Steam Greenlight or even Steam Early Access. I want to play this game NOW! And pay for it to support you!
