Videos!

March 20, 2013 | Dukus | 63 Comments

After recording some game footage, editing the video, and encoding it, I was running out of disc space. So I deleted all the source videos. To my dismay, I had accidentally messed up the end of the video. Having only the final encoded videos, I had to re-record everything and re-edit it again. Good times. Thankfully perforce keeps this from happening to my code and game assets.

Anyway... here's some video of the game for your enjoyment.

  1. This looks fantastic! I've been following your blog for a little while and have been impressed with what I've seen so far, but seeing it in motion is just brilliant. You're clearly paying a lot of attention to the little details and I for one can't wait to play it! Well done, and thank you 🙂

  2. Indeed. Amazing to finally see this is motion. I absolutely love the interface. From what I can see, the icons are nice and minimalistic, without making their function hard to understand. Nice job.

I noticed a temperature meter in your second video. It said 20-something degrees when it turned winter... I assume you use Fahrenheit? Any chance you could add an option to use Celcius instead, for us silly Europeans? I doubt it'll matter much, gameplay wise, but thiese numbers confuse my simple mind :p

  3. Just updated my task list with an option for Celcius. Should be a quick easy addition.

  4. Hope you love roads haha, reminds me of cultures 2 looks very promising though cant wait to play it.

  5. Oh man, that looks lovely. You're doing a great job.

What I'm hoping for is a good metallurgy system where you have to upgrade from copper age, bronze alloys, up to iron and steel, etc.

For a great resource on early cultures, be sure to check this page (focuses mainly on tools and metallurgy):

  6. Game is looking amazing

For future videos I use Bandicam for my channel it encodes at alot smaller file size then fraps or other programs without the lose of any quality

If you need any help with videos PM me next time

  7. As a lover of Settlers, Hinterlands, Simcity, Children of the Nile... I think this game looks great, can't wait to try it out.

  8. Looks great! Really great.

What I want to learn more about is later-game technologies and challenges.

  9. Love the look of the game! One question regarding soil being ruined after too much farming: Will you implement crop rotation as a possible solution to that? Such as having two fields, one for potatoes and one for wheat, and alternating between the two every two years or so?. Because that would be sweet!

  10. You should get this on steam early access as soon as possible. Looks great - deserves funding 🙂

  11. This game really fullfills all the dreams a city builder want from a game.

Just one question, will you add any sort of combat and/or castle building?

  12. Dammit man, you are amazing. I started learning to program about 6 months ago. My dream is to make a couple of strategy games that have been kicking around in my head for years. To hear that you have done all the art, coding, audio is just massively inspirational. How many hours a day do you put in and how long do you estimate the entire process will take you? Are you using Unity?
Given that I am early days yet and I have a young family, my estimate for the completion of my first game is about ten years. Which is sad, because I want to play it now, but if I don't do it I'll never play it!

  13. Wow, this looks really good. It's not often I get excited about playing a city building game.

Have you considered putting it for sale before release (perhaps at a discount) with alpha access? Similar to Notch's minecraft release or Steam's new Early Access program?

  14. Game looks like something I've been trying to find. Really looking forward to trying this game out. Is there going to be a beta? I would definitely pay to get beta access!

  15. It looks great, it feels great just looking at it.

Please early access this or kick start it. I would love to throw some money at you : )

  16. I almost got the chills when I imagined the people work to build up stocks before winter hits. This game is on my list.

Like some other people said, I would pay to test the alpha/beta version of this game.

  17. Amazing job keep going like this, as other comments i'm ready to pay to have access to a Beta and help you as your personal QA 🙂

  18. Good luck with the game! It's really impressive work for a single person, and the market for city builders is quite starved today so great timing!

  19. Is gameplay going to persist in the medieval style or will your community progress culturally and technologically into modern civilisation?

Any chance of early access beta keys? I would love to get hands on with this game.

  20. I can't wait for this game... I've been wanting something like this for a long time.

  21. I love the look of this. It looks like a Settlers game, with slightly updated graphics from S II, but without all the gimmicks and "fluff" of S V - VII. Absolutely gorgeous, and I'm liking the thought of going back to a grid system for my city building - but that's my OCD kicking in.

    Insta-purchase.

  22. Take my money! Take it now!

In all seriousness, the game looks fantastic. If you early access it on Steam I'll throw my money on you so fast you won't know what hit you 🙂

  23. Already more enjoyable than SimCity! \o/

In all seriousness, that looks amazing, keep up the excellent work, give us a paid alpha, we have some money that we would prefer you to have

  24. This is incredible stuff. I cannot wait to play. I'd love to help out with the project in any way I can (I'm a crappy programmer, modeler, and texturer, so I've got that going for me)

  25. This looks wonderful. The idea that careful management of people and natural resources being key to survival is compelling, and the small scale makes it intimate.

I would love to see the ability to build structures at angles/curves, instead of just a grid - I think that will make the game seem a lot more human, which is already one of its strengths.

Finally, if this ends up being easily moddable I think it'll be a huge hit. Looks great so far.

  26. You should let people sign up for an email list on your site so they can be notified when your game is released!

  27. I'm looking forward to this game. It looks terrific and has a lot of what O like in a game. Sort of reminds me of the old game "1604" in some respects.

  28. Please give us some way to donate towards this. I know that alot of people would offer support towards you making this, myself included.

    Keep up the good work!

  29. Definitely interested in this game. The premise is very intriguing. Keep up the good work, and as others have said, Steam Early Access or project Greenlight may be a way to get more support.

Keep us posted about testing, if you need it.

  30. This game looks amazing!

If you ever need urban design advice (I'm a student of urban design), feel free to ask! You have my email here and my twitter is @flobin.

    Anyway, cool stuff!

  31. Thank you.

I didn't realise how much I wanted a game like this until I heard about this today. But this seems to combine so many of my computer and board game tick boxes into one smart package. I can't wait.

The only thing not ticked for me is 'fog of war' I love the exploration in Civ games and discovering new areas of the map. But don't let feature creep delay this game 🙂 I like many others would be happy to play as soon as possible.

  32. This is looking very good! I love this type of game and it looks like you're doing a great job capturing a host of things that are missing in other games of this type!

  33. Looks very promising. As others have mentioned, I would like to see this on Steam Early Access and would be happy to pay for it.

Also, I am interested to know if you have any plans or thoughts regarding third party mod support? This looks like a very nice platform to add to.

    KUTGW!

  34. Holy shit:D Hope this turns out well. Cant wait to throw my money at it. This is the game of my dreams. I play a lot of RTS games just for the city building aspect, and this looks and hopefully stays as a pure city management game:D

  35. Amazing work! Especially mind blowing to know you made the engine yourself!! Hope you do VERY well with this!

    Look forward to release!

  36. Wow. i as well would love to pay you to alpha/beta this game. i would love to see it have a physical disk release as well and not only digital, as i am a game collector and from watching these videos i am bitten by the bug... 🙂

  37. Wow this looks incredible! My only hope is that your town always has difficulties to overcome and it's not just the first few years of your town

  38. Holy cow. If this game came out tomorrow for $50, I would buy it, no questions asked. Not only is it incredibly detail-oriented, it seems to fill a niche that hasn't been filled before. It's really a village-builder more than a city-builder, and that is something that interests me quite a bit.

Please keep up the good work. If extra funds would help, I think you would do well on Kickstarter.

  39. This looks very impressive sir, VERY impressive. As an amateur coder I dream of the skills and creativity you have. I can't wait to play this game, I cant wait to see you succeed as an indie developer.

  40. This looks great. Although I would prefer just a simulation game over combat, it would still be great. And having to make sure you did everything needed to survive the winter is great. I hope to see expansions that bring it onto other eras of history. Keep this up and going!!

  41. Fantastic images/videos. This looks very interesting.

Cant wait to get my hands on this, hope it plays as well as it looks.

  42. You are doing an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL job on this project. It's looking like fun, and I hope you keep working on it/finish it.

  43. This gets my happiness levels up! Waiting and watching with excitement.
Very pleased that the population control is based on the people and their children that they have and that it's not driven by people "arriving" to the area.
Any chance that they bear names(editable?)
    and pass those names down?

  44. This is exactly the kind of city building strategy game I've been looking for. Phenomenal. It looks really promising.

A question/suggestion: will there be a form of crop rotation so that the fields remain viable, given that the maps are limited in size?

  45. Wow! I cannot wait for this to hit beta for the public select few. 😀 😀 😀

Dang! Looks perfect. Like others have said, absolutely phenomenal! 🙂 Cannot wait to see this develop. If any help is needed with writing stories etc hit me up!

  46. This looks fantastic. A friend linked me to this a couple of weeks back because I had noted the complete lack of quality city builders with this type of flavor.

I just wanted to know, is it possible that after your town has established itself that the people of the town could elect a lord and they would build a castle for him? You could make the establishment of the town's castle as the introduction to combat.
